ROOM

Art for the living room

About two thirds of the furniture width, and above a sofa 15 to 25 cm above the backrest.

In the living room the furniture width is the measure, not the wall width. A painting narrower than the sofa beneath it looks too small, even when the wall has plenty of room.

Above the sofa

Two thirds of the sofa width, 15 to 25 cm above the backrest.

With a sofa of 220 cm that comes to about 150 cm of picture width, either as a single work or as a pair.

Free wall

Two thirds to three quarters of the wall width.

On a three-metre wall, 180 to 220 cm is right. That is larger than most people estimate.

Centre height

145 to 150 cm above the floor.

That is eye level standing. Above furniture the distance to the backrest applies, not this figure.

Sitting rather than standing

In a living room people sit, so hang a little lower.

If you mostly sit, the centre can go at 135 cm. Museum height is for rooms where people stand.

Which technique

Free choice, there is no restriction here.

Gold leaf works with changing daylight, charcoal stays the same. Both work in a home.

In short

Two thirds of the furniture width, 15 to 25 cm above the backrest.

Prices from CHF 300, direct from the studio near Zurich.
