How a picture appears in a room depends on the technique. Gilded surfaces change with the light that falls upon them, in comparison : charcoal remains matte and the same throughout the day

OIL OVER GOLD LEAF/ SILVER LEAF

Silver leaf, gold leaf painting

Gold/silver leaf is applied by hand and then painted over with oil paints. The real metal lies beneath the oil paint and shows through in the thinner areas. The tone of silver leaf is cooler than that of gold, so the image appears more subdued. The supports are canvases or wooden panels.

Oil paints with cold wax

Oil paints mixed with cold wax make the surface of the picture textured and matte.

Used on medium to large-format paintings with abstract, landscape motifs.
