Square paintings
A square gives the wall no direction, which is why it suits places where neither height nor width should be emphasised.
A square claims nothing about the room. That makes it the safest choice on a free-standing wall area and the best shape for groups.
Why squares work well in groups
Equal edge lengths make every gap readable.
Four squares in a grid look ordered. Four different formats look accidental.
The minimum size
Under 50 cm a square becomes an object.
Small squares read as a tile rather than a painting. The effect of a painting begins at about 70 cm.
Gold leaf in a square
A gilded square works like a source of light.
With no direction in the format, the effect of the material comes through more strongly.
