Oil paintings
Originals in oil, often over gold leaf or with cold wax.
Oil is the basis of most works in the studio. It runs from the thin glazed surface over gold leaf to the matte, impasto finish made with cold wax.
Why oil
Oil dries slowly and can be built up in layers.
That gives depth and transitions that fast-drying paints cannot. It costs time but keeps the surface alive.
Oil over gold leaf
Under the oil lies real gold or silver leaf.
The metal shows through the glazed areas and shifts with the light. More on this under Gold leaf painting.
Care
Dust dry with a soft brush, no water.
Avoid direct sun and dry heating air. Touch gilded areas only with the brush.
In short
Oil as the basis, often over metal or with wax.
Prices from CHF 300, straight from the studio near Zurich.
