Format, height and tone can be settled in the room in twenty minutes, and not at all on a screen.
Two things cannot be judged from a photograph: how large a painting will look on a particular wall, and what the light does to a gilded surface. An appointment on site settles both.
What gets settled on site
Wall width, viewing distance, direction of light and eye level.
Four numbers, from which the format and the height follow.
The paper test
A cut-out at the planned size on the wall.
That answers the question of size straight away and costs nothing.
Checking the light
With gilded works the direction of the light decides.
A wall with no raking light takes the effect out of a gold leaf painting.
