SUBJECT
Figurative charcoal
Body studies in charcoal, monochrome, closely cropped and without a face.
Lips, chin, throat, nape. The crop stays so close that the drawing becomes a surface before you recognise it as a body. One work is available.
Why without a face
A face draws all the attention to itself.
Without eyes the drawing stays a study of light on skin. With eyes it would be a portrait.
Charcoal as a material
Charcoal does not cover, it settles into the grain of the paper.
That is why the transitions stay soft and the darkest areas never go fully black.
Paired with gold leaf
The gold panel gives the matt drawing a counterweight.
Two parts, the same height, a small gap. See also Charcoal and gold leaf.
Which room suits it
Rooms with a calm wall colour and little competition.
A charcoal work needs distance from patterns. Next to wallpaper it loses.
Availability
One work is available.
Further studies are made on request.
